T Minus 18 Days

As Peanut's running out of space in the uterus, we're running out of things to talk about with Dr. Liu. At yesterday's visit, I asked him all about Cesarean Section, just in case we need an emergency one and I'll know what's gonna happen. This is what we learned:

  • even with my previous medical history, there's no reason for the doctor to suggest Cesarean over vaginal birth
  • Bill won't be able to be in the room with us
  • I can stay awake during the procedure
  • they can make an incision along my old scar from previous surgeries
  • I won't be able to able have skin-to-skin contact with the baby immediately after birth
  • they'll put me under when they stitch me back together
  • the doctor will do a general inspection of the reproduction organs
  • given my previous medical history, they may even do a biopsy
  • then I'll be taken to the Recovery Room (and Peanut will be taken to the nursery)
  • they'll bring the baby to our room after I leave the Recovery Room
  • it's generally a 5-day stay in the hospital after a Cesarean, but we can leave early if the recovery goes well
It got me thinking maybe we should consider an elective C-section because Dr. Liu will be able to take a look at my insides and maybe do a biopsy. The thing is, I'm not quite in the clear as far as post-cancer monitoring goes. It's been about 20 months since my second-look surgery, and the last blood test done for CA-125 was in the beginning of my pregnancy. If we resume frequent monitoring after my 6th-week postpartum checkup and discover something suspecious, I may very well need to undergo another surgery to be sure of what the condition is.

I don't know if it's selfish or naive to think this way, but it occurred to me last night, after talking to the doctor that, if we could kill two birds with one stone (Peanut's birth and an inspection of organs), why don't we?

I should make an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. I wanna talk about it more with Dr. Liu.
