Happy Year of the Tigrrrrrrrrrrrr

Having a kid is so much fun because you get to experience his "first"s with him! Does it feel the same with a second kid? NOT that we're thinking about having a second kid now, but I'm wondering if it would be just as exciting as the first time around, or is it kinda like "Been there, Done that"?

Anyway, that's for you, all the moms with more than one kid, to answer if you want.

As usual, we went to my mom's for Chinese New Year's Eve dinner. I almost feel bad about showing you what we had for Chinese New Year because it, by no means, represents what people usually have for the Biggest Meal of the Year. But I have a teeny tiny family (it was just me and my mom, and now we have Bill and Kai, and my cousin Karen).

Edit: Check out the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner ar my cousin's husband's house. Now that' hardcore. I counted, There are 18 dishes on the table, and apparently there was a fish dish that was on the side (couldn't fit them all on the table).

Anyway, back to my mom's...

CNY Dinner
The three plates on the top (from left to right): meat sausages, liver sausages and spring onions, Chinese-style beef stew with onions and tomatoes, pan-fried baby garlic shoots and beef
The left bottom dish is a fish (ta-dah). It's fried to crisp first. Then it's cooked in a yummy fresh tomato-and-spring-onion based sauce. It's one of Bill's favorite Chinese dishes.
The big pot on the right is called "Fo Tiaou Chiang", literally it means "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall". It's supposed to be sooooooo yummy that... heh! even Buddha would jump the wall just to have it. I'm not 100% sure about each of the individual ingredients in the pot, but there were taro, bamboo shoots, pork, cabbage, and egg dumplings. I think shark fin was once one of the ingredients, but nowadays it's been replaced with glass noodles.

Kai and Grandma Ada
He got the traditional Chinese hat as a hand-me-down from Auntie Lisa Martin of the Vancouver Martins. It's even got a little queue attached to it.

Kai got his very first red envelope
Kai didn't care how much was in it; all he wanted to do was to taste the envelope

Kai and Daddy

Kai loves "standing"

Daddy, Kai,, and Karen
Here's a question: What is my cousin Karen's relationship to Kai?
Some say she's his second cousin; others say she's his cousin once removed.
In Chinese, she's his auntie.

Kai's gotta learn to use the chopsticks one day

Happy Year of the Tiger, to you and yours! We had our own little celebration, too, complete with dumplings and red envelopes for the kids. And my youngest, who is 5, liked the envelope more than what was inside, too!

And your cousin would be Kai's second cousin.

It's still Chinese New Year! We rock for celebrating for 15 days!!!

Drooling over all the dishes now. I love that fish dish too. Do you know that I gained 5 lbs. in those 2 days when I was home? I am still struggling with getting them off of me. *sobs* But it was well worth it. :-)
