A Handful & a Mindful

In the car
"Daddy going fast drive car."
"Oh, is Daddy driving fast?"
"Yeah!"
"Should we tell Daddy to slow down, Kai?"
"Yeah. Daddy, slow down. Be careful, Daddy. Car going fast."

In the car again
"Mack!" (Lightning McQueen's transporter from the movie Cars)
"You saw Mack? Where?"
"Right there!" pointing at a bus.
"That's not Mack. It's a bus."
"Bus kinda like a Mack."
Are you kidding me? How does a 2-year-old know what's 'kinda' like what?!
A couple of hours later, Kai proved it to me that THIS 2-year-old knows exactly what exactly he knows.
"Mommy, look! Kaikai put bowl [on] Kaikai's head. Kinda like a crown."
"Yeah? The bowl is kinda like a crown, huh? What about your McQueen hat? Is it like a crown too?" (Sorry, kid. You have a I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it kinda mom)
"No... (in a "Don't be silly" tone, mind you) No McQueen hat like crown more. Kaikai put this bowl on head... kinda like a crown."
Bam! Mommy was e-du-ca-ted tonight!

After the bath while I was trimming his nails
"Mommy, giraffe crying."
"Aw~~~ Why is giraffe crying?"
"Giraffe have a boo boo on cheek. This cheek. Look, Mommy!"
(the stuffed animal's cheek just needs a few stitches, but Mommy's been too lazy. In fact, I don't even know if we have a sewing kit)
"I can see that. Don't worry. We'll fix it later." (Liar liar pants on fire)
"Okay."
A few seconds later...
"Mommy, giraffe crying now. Boo boo hurt." (Busted, mommy!)
"How can we make him feel better?"
"Giraffe need a Band-Aid."
(Phew!) "Yeah? Should we put a Band-Aid on giraffe?"
"Yeah. Put Band-Aid on. No giraffe crying more."
(We may not have a sewing kit, but we have some cool Lightning McQueen band-aids in the first aid kit. I took one out and helped Kai put it on giraffe's boo boo)
He gleamed, "Giraffe all better now! Show Daddy. Kaikai go downstairs show Daddy!"

Before bedtime in Kai's room
Kai sat in his bed looking at giraffe's band-aided face. Then he said, "Giraffe kinda cute."
"Only 'kinda' cute? Who's 'really' cute then?"
"Kaikai."
No shame... Ur, I mean, good for you, kiddo!
"I agree. Kaikai's pretty cute. Is McQueen cute?"
"No! McQueen race car. Vroom vroom! Fast!"
"You're right. I guess race cars shouldn't be cute. What about Aiden (Kai's daycare playmate)? Is Aiden cute?"
"No." he giggled.
"Is Sophie cute?"
"No." big smiles!
"What about Maggie? Is Maggie cute?" (Maggie's Kai's little crush at the daycare)
Kai hesitated a bit. Then he looked away all shy and smiling, "No..."
"Really? Maggie's not cute? I'm surprised! Is Daddy cute?"
"No."
Sorry, dad.
I was almost afraid to ask, "Is Mommy cute?"
"No."
Saw that coming but OUCH nonetheless.
"Alright stinker, who's cute?"
He looked at me and said it in this "I already told you" tone), "Kaikai!"
I stand corrected.
