A 2-year-old's Reasoning Skills

Kai gave his stuffed tow truck a squeeze, "Kaikai wuv Mater."
"Aw~~ That's very sweet of you, Kai." "Mater sad, Mommy."
"Why is Mater sad?"
"Because no Kaikai want Mater more."

Kai came into the kitchen, sat down on the floor, and started pulling his socks off.
"Keep your socks on, Kai. The floor's cold."
"Because Kaikai no want sock on... It's wet."

I cut two fingers while making dinner the other night, and Kai's been asking for a band-aid every time he sees mine.
"Kaikai want a (Curious) George band-aid, Mommy."
"You don't need a band-aid, baby."
"Kaikai need a band-aid because..... feel better."
"You don't feel good now, Kai? What's wrong?"
You could tell the little guy's wheels were turning.
He then rammed his head into my thigh, "Kaikai need a George band-aid now... on the head.... because bonk... on Mommy's leg.... just like Boo Hoo Bird."
:) Smart kid!

I borrowed a baby doll from Daycare to see if we can make the idea of a baby sister more real for Kai. When he saw me picking up the doll at Daycare, he yelled, "No Mommy pick up baby!" However, the baby has been home with us for a day now, so I thought I'd try again.
After dinner, when Kai was playing in the living room, I said, "Mommy's gonna go get the baby, okay? I'll be right back."
Kai followed me to the back room, "Where baby go?"
"She's sleeping right here," I picked up the doll and carried her in my arm.
When we went back to the living room, Kai was playing 'around' me and the baby. You could tell he was very aware of the fact that there's something/someone else there with Mommy, but sweet as he is, he tried to include the baby in his play.
"Baby look! Here's a dump truck."
I tried answering for the baby, but of course the baby didn't move.
After about 5 minutes of trying to show his toys to baby and seeing how she just lay there, Kai reached over and said, "No want baby here!"
"Why not?"
"Because baby no talk Kaikai."
"But baby's sleeping."
"No Mommy hold baby sleeping. Mommy talk... play cars with Kaikai. Mommy put baby away now."
Oh boy! We still have a long way to go.

Just when I started wondering if this gentle introduction to a new baby idea would ever work, Kai surprised me yet again. As we were singing the good night song to the people (toys included) he knows in the dark, Kai said, "Baby sister next."
"Whose baby sister?"
"Kaikai's."
