The Mature 9-Month-Old

Wei's full head of hair definitely makes her look less like a baby and more like a little person, but I also think her demeanor and her expressions also contribute to making her appear older than she actually is.

We went to the library today. Wei and I were sitting side by side on the floor in the kids' area. I was looking for books; she was taking everything off the shelf. Eventually she found a book she was interested in. She opened the book, looked at the pictures, smacked the page a few times and "talked" to the picture, and turned to another page and repeated the same thing. There was another baby there -- a little boy about a year old walking very unsteadily around the kids area. His dad was reading a children's book by himself, leaving his son to roam alone. Suddenly the baby boy got cranky and started crying. Wei looked up from the book and stared at the baby with a disapproving look on her face. Her brows knotted and her lips pursed. She wasn't concerned or scared. She was annoyed with the crying baby. If Wei could talk, she'd probably scuff and say, "Get a hold of yourself, man. Quit embarrassing yourself!" (I told Bill afterwards, "She was almost a bit snobby... as if she looked down on that baby.")

The story doesn't end here. Wei watched intently as the boy's dad comforted him. Here eyes were locked onto the father-and-son pair and her hands froze to hold the book on the last page she was reading, ur... looking at. She watched and waited as if she wanted to make sure the dad did his job right. That moment, Wei looked so much more mature than her age. She seemed to already know so much and have her own opinions about what went on. When finally the boy quieted down, Wei slowly blinked and her eyes went back to the book on the floor in front of her. Then she became a 9-month-old baby again, smacking the book while talking gibberish.

From the moment she was born, Wei seemed to know how things work in this world. Now she's learning a massive amount of things very quickly (having a big brother helps). I really think she'll be a riot once she can talk. I'm excited to hear what goes on in that little head of hers.

Oh boy... With these two, our life will never be quiet again...
