The 37th Week Checkup
Peanut was squirming around and hiccuping right before I was called into the ultrasound room. The first thing that showed up on the screen was his thigh bone (right beneath my diaphragm). The doctor measured it and said, "Wow~ either you have a very big baby or your baby has very long legs." Then we located his head and saw the side profile of his face. "Here's an eye," the doctor said, "it looks like his eyes are moving. Maybe he's looking around." The poor little guy looked totally cramped in there, with his face right against the uterine wall and his bottom against the placenta. At one point, Bill and I thought we saw him sucking his thumb, but the doctor thought his hand was just resting close to his mouth.
The doctor estimated his weight to be 3,100 grams (6.83lbs). Doctor Liu and the nurse think he's on the larger side (the nurse said 2,500 gram (5.5 lbs) was the normal weight for newborns), and they advised that I watch my diet for the next 3 weeks.
I finally lost it and had a tizzy fit after we got home from the hospital. Lying on the couch with my head on Bill's thigh, I cried about how I'm tired of being made to feel that my pregnancy is somehow abnormal; as if it's abnormal because I'm doing something wrong or not doing enough. I've been told that my belly is exceptionally big week after week, in the yoga class, in the market, on the street, in cabs, and at work. However, I don't know why my belly is so big, and I do watch what I put into my mouth. I mean, let's look at the facts so far: I don't have gestational diabetes, my weight gain has not been radical, my blood pressure has been stable, and I've kept up with walking to and from work and going to yoga twice a week since I was 12 weeks pregnant. What am I doing wrong here?
What the nurse said stuck in my head and 2,500 grams just sounded awfully small to me, so I called John and asked how much Willy weighed when he was born. John told me that they actually induced labor at 37 weeks because Willy weighed 3,450 grams and they thought John's wife wouldn't be able to give birth if Willy had continued to get bigger. In other words, at 37 weeks, Willy weighed 300 grams more than what Peanut weighs now.
Then I researched online for the ideal birth weight for interracial Asian-Caucasian babies and found this interesting article on Baby Center. If 3,360 grams is the average weight for babies in the Asian-mother Caucasian-father groups in this research, Willy was definitely on the bigger side, and Peanut only has a little bit of room to grow until he reaches 40 weeks.
What I'd be interested to find out about this research is the height and weight of the parents, especially the Asian mothers. As far as Asian chicks go, John's wife and I are both tall (she's a bit taller than I am). I don't think it's that unusual for our babies to be as big as they were/are.
My next appointment is in a week. I'm going to write down everything I eat and the amount of time I spend on doing physical activities throughout the week so we could see how much weight I gain in relation to everything I eat and do.
p.s. Though I'm in my 37th week according to the due date, the doctor in the ultrasound room put 38 week and 3 days pregnant according to his estimation of Peanut's weight.

You aren't doing anything wrong. Please don't change what you're doing. It sounds like you're doing everything right. The information they're giving you is purely cultural and it's based on Taiwanese parents and babies. Jordy was 6 lbs 5 oz which is on the lighter side, according to all my other mommy friends and their babies. Everything is A-OK, and you're awesome, mama!
Forget them and their charts and stats and guestimations...
Buy them a coffee room book on bedside manners, eat meat and ice cream to build up strength and stamina like boxers before the big bout and relax. Doctors that muse aloud with patients need to be confronted and bombarded with questions or told to stop. If ya'll were married and he did that while you were cooking you'd fricassee him on the spot!
No matter what you do and they say it's a done deal now so indulge yourself.
Only one meltdown in 37 weeks of pg!? Martin family record if you ask me...!
I agree, don't worry about ANYTHING!
Just relax and enjoy the last two to three weeks of your pregnancy. Yes, walk each day, eat well, but just don't stress. Sit and rub your belly, and love the little swimmer in there. Soon he will be in your arms.
Thanks guys. I'm back to my old self now.
Oh... and Pop, of course that wasn't my only meltdown. That was the only one I admitted publicly.
Hey Kate,
Jenney in Oregon, here. As both a doula and a student midwife, I can assure you that the baby is at a totally normal weight for this stage of pregnancy! It sounds like you are doing all the right things to make sure that both you and baby are super healthy. Unfortunately it seems that doctors all over the world try to scare their patients into thinking that their baby will be too big, but I can tell you from experience that almost NEVER happens. I've even seen a mom about my size (same size as you) birth an eleven pound baby, and barely even have a tear on her. Trust your body, your baby, and the birth process! You can do it!
Thanks, Jenney.
I wouldn't want to birth an eleven-pound baby, but it's nice to be reassured that I'm doing it right.
Congratulations, by the way! Maybe there will soon be a little one on the way too?!
Juli's friend Rae Ann had a 10+ pound baby AT HOME!!!! I think she's crazy, but whatever. Your nephew (Tyler, Jeremy & Debbie's oldest) was born at 2 pounds (at 26 weeks!!), he's truly a miracle baby! Renee was 8lbs 4oz, and all our babies ranged from 7ish to 8 or 9ish pounds. Big or small, babies are INCREDIBLY resilient.
Jenny is right, listen to your baby and your body. You're gonna' do great!! ;-)
ps. i'm behind again......need to catch up!
Yes, there may be "the norm" for what they see in mixed couples, but no, Peanut is not too big. He's right where he should be.
I'll pat Jenney on the back again and remind you that it is amazingly true, Peanut will tell you. We are all praying for you, for a healthy pregnancy, for a healthy and safe labor and delivery, and for a perfectly healthy baby boy!
You will have the support of all of your loved ones for whatever you might do, but might I suggest, if you can find the strength and the courage, let your body labor naturally without being induced. Being someone who caved at about 7cm both times, I have no leg to stand on when it comes to drugs or epidurals (though they still freak me out and I still long to do it fully natural!), but I definitely think that being induced with Natalie was much more difficult than my labor with Maggie. The contractions are much harder, much stronger, and come on much more quickly. Not to scare! I'm still SO thankful that I had my doctor who I had developed a relationship with and trusted with my baby's life! I was induced with Natalie because I was afraid to have her with an on-call doctor! But, like I said, it was hard.
And also, I agree with mommy. Enjoy these last few weeks. You have a human being growing inside of you! He will be here soon enough.
K. It's nearly 1am. I have to try to sleep now. Night. I thi.nk I'm not mabye mayKing scents enymore. ;o)
Love,
lil' sis'
