7 Days to Take-off

This time next week we'll be at the airport. Probably already checked
in and through immigration.

I can hardly wait.

Though Bill's also excited about this trip home, I'm sure he's not as
antsy as I am. You see, I haven't been on a plane since we got back
from North America TWO years ago. 2 years! It's like being grounded
for seven hundred and thirty days. Only I wasn't being punished, I
just got pregnant and had a baby.

Oh I can already see it: the extra bright lights and the smell of
anticipation at the Departure Terminal. The weird yet freeing thought
that, once you go through customs, you're neither here nor there.
You're giddy cause this is the beginning of a new journey. You get an
overpriced roast beef sandwich and an Asahi at the Deli. While eating,
you go over and modify your travel plans. To kill time until boarding
call, you browse the bookstore, try on fragrances at dutyfree shops,
and look around in the gift shops and, though you think you're paying
too much for it, get a fridge magnet or a shot glass as souvenir.

It's all part of traveling, and I'm so excited that Kai's gonna be a
part of the whole experience. I've been reading up on "flying with a
baby", and I started creating mock situations of what it's like on the
plane and practicing how to handle them. For instance, I purposely
make Kai sit on my lap during a few play sessions during a day and I
practice feeding with him sitting on my lap. I leave only one toy out
for a few days and keep the others out of sight to maintain the
novelty. I want to be as prepared as I can because I know we will
encounter obstacles and get frustrated/irritated at sone point during
the journey. But at the end, all of that will only make a good story
even better.

I'm getting more excited as I write. This is epic, man! This is the
first of the many trips we will be taking as a family. It's gonna be
great!!
