Parallel Packing

Packing. Bill and I are no spring chicken when it comes to it. After
all, we've moved half a dozen times in the last six years (okay, Bill
has moved us half a dozen times. I was always dealing with something
when we moved). With all this practice, you might think Bill could've
reached the semi-professional level and packing should be a breeze for
him now. Unfortunately, we're such pack rats that we accumulate more
things after each move.

While we may be experienced in uprooting and relocating, this time is
significantly different (=more difficult) than the previous moves
we've done. To begin with, this time we're packing for an additional
member in the family. I mean, he's not even 10 months old and he's
already got three big boxes of "stuff", and that doesn't include his
rocker and high chair (all I can say is I'm so glad we didn't get him
one of those push 'n walk thingys).

Packing is doubly difficult when you've got an active, curious 9-month
old who apparently thinks it's a game to pull everything Mommy and
Daddy have just put in a box out and dump it all over the floor. He's
got such fine motor skills that he's able to scrape the corners of
packing tape up and tear it off with his thumb and index finger. He
cracks up at the sound of the ripping tape off of a surface, and that
piece of torn tape goes directly into... yup, his mouth. He's thrilled
at the fact that he can pull himself up, climb onto one box, crawl
over multiple boxes, and uncover a pair of scissors or a roll of tape
that his patents have "hidden" out of his sight. He has absolutely no
immunity against Daddy's toolbox and empty suitcases in various sizes
-- must take everything out of the former and attempt to stuff himself
in the latter.

As if we're not faced with enough challenges trying to pack while
constantly taking things out of Kai's hands/mouth or grabbing him away
from electric sockets/cords, Bill and I are doing what I call
"Parallel Packing" (yes, I am that big of a dork). While packing to
move out of this apartment, we're also packing for our trip to the
States and Canada. It almost feels like we're finally getting out of
Taiwan... well, almost.

I just set up an appointment with the movers. We move mid week next
week (7 in the morning to avoid the heat), which is almost exactly a
week before our flight. It's happening, people!! We're finally getting
out of this apartment, and soon we'll be on the other side of the
great Pacific! No mosquito nets. No unbearable heat. No inconsiderate
landlords. Not for a couple of months anyway.

great Pacific!... there is plenty of available housing!

We so want to move back. The question is if, how, and how quickly we can get jobs in North America in order to afford it. The economy in Asia seems to be doing better than countries on the other side of the big pond.
