Daddy

"Who's your best buddy, Kai?"
"Daddy!!
*********************************************

Tonight, Bill went to a friend's house to play board games. As I was half-way through a bed time story, Kai buried his face in his hands. When he looked up, I saw his eyes were watering and his cheeks red.
"What's wrong, babe?"
"Nothing," he replied as he quickly wiped a drop of tear off his face.
"Are you sad?"
He shook his head, avoiding eye contact.
"Kaikai," I tried again, "What's the matter?"
Silence. He turned his head so I couldn't see his face. "I miss daddy," he said quietly.
"Aw~" I hugged him in my arms, "Daddy's at Uncle Iain's house. You'll see him tomorrow morning, okay?"
"Okay."
Just when I was about to continue the story, my mom opened the door to her room downstairs.
"What makes sound make?" (What makes that sound?) Kai's eyes sparkled.
"What sound?"
"That's the door. Downstairs. To outside. Daddy's coming home! I want daddy to come up!" he said each sentence with increased excitement.
"Oh baby..." It was hard for me to say it. "It was wai-puo going into her room, Kai. Daddy won't be home till late tonight, after you have fallen asleep. But you'll see daddy tomorrow morning, okay?"
"Okay." Kai lay down on his tummy facing away from me.
"Do you want mommy to keep reading?"
"No," he said. "I'm going to sleep now."
