I'm so behind on my blog posts it's not even funny. For some reason, I have EIGHT drafts that we're never finished. I really have to get better at writing quickly and just publish them.
The following story happened a few days ago.
Wei woke up in her rocking chair shortly before Kai came home from daycare. She talked to and smacked at the butterfly and snail dangling in front of her for a while, but very quickly the 3-month-old baby grew increasingly impatient and started to whine. "Mommy will be done in a moment." I shouted from the kitchen, hoping that my voice would offer some reassurance and comfort. It worked for a whole five seconds and the whining resumed.
"Wham!" the back door swung open and Kai was standing there with the handle of his lunch box in his mouth. "Mommy, zrook!" he said between his teeth. "Zrook whart I harv!"
"You have your lunch box in your mouth! That's silly."
"Yeah!" he was obviously entertained by how silly he is. As Bill walked passed him to put his jackets down, Kai said, "Mommy said I'm silly, Daddy." He then put the lunch box on the counter and sat down on the floor to take his shoes off.
"Wei's crying." Kai noticed as he was pulling his right shoe off from the heel. He jumped up and ran straight into the living room.
In the past, Kai has tried to play with or comfort Wei, but sometimes he doesn't know his own strength. Seeing him running into the living room like that made me a bit nervous, so I followed him.
Kai ran to Wei's side, kneeled down right next to her rocking chair, and started gently patting on her chest. "It's okay, Wei. I'm here. I'm here."
We've always known Kai would be a wonderful big brother, but he's really exceeding our expectations when you consider how young he is. I also find it comforting knowing that, at times of uncertainty, they will always be there for one another. The bond between siblings is something that I've never experienced, and I'm really happy that my kids get to share that.
Oh and today, Wei laughed!! She let out a big toot as we were chatting on the couch, so I laughed. She first gave me some big smiles, but then she started giggling too. It was the best sound in the world!! This little girl is getting prettier and prettier every day. At first, Bill joked about getting a shotgun. Earlier this morning, I heard him mumbling, "I don't know what I'm gonna do when you become a teenager..... Maybe we should just hire a bodyguard, huh?!"
Daddy's in full-on protector mode! So cute!!
