Report from Kai's Teachers

Kai's teacher Nancy was so excited to see me yesterday. "Oh Kate! I have LOTS to tell you. First of all, Kai had a fantastic day today. Oh, where do i start?! I'll tell you what just happened. When we were having the afternoon snack, Kai was sitting here at the kitchen table and Lily was sitting down there in one of those little chairs. Lily was upset after she woke up from the nap because she wanted her mommy, so Kai offered to hold her hand to make her feel better. They held hands the entire time until they finished their snack. Isn't that just the loveliest thing you've heard? Kai is such an amazing boy, and it's because you guys are amazing patents. And he has such a good memory! He remembers everything!! You know, when he goes 'Remember when...'? And he LOVES stories and books so much he just gobbles them all up. Last Friday, Ruthy made a little couch in the group room, and Kai was sitting there with Lily. Then he patted the seat and told Ivy to sit with them. You know Ivy, the new little girl to the daycare? Then he read, from memory of course, the entire Baa Baa Black Sheep to them. And the girls listened!! It was sooooo cute!"

Tess, another teacher at the daycare, also told me about Kai's "advanced language skills". It was potty time, and Tess had 3 children in the bathroom with her. Although different kids are at different stages with regards to potty training, Tess always asks everybody if they'd like to sit on the potty. Kai said he wanted to sit on the potty that day, so Tess gave him lots of praises. "Wow, Kai's such a big boy now." Then Kai thought about it for a moment and said, "E'cuse me, Tess. I think... uh.. actually Jack is a big boy. I mean, uh... I think Jack is actually the biggest boy here. Not me. Not Aiden. Jack!"

Back to Teacher Nancy. "Today we went out for a walk. We went to see the turtles. Now Kai usually wants to walk by himself, and he was walking a few steps ahead of everybody. Then he stopped and squatted down to look at something. It was dog poop. I told him it was dog poop and I didn't want him to touch it because it's yucky. To show him that I trusted that he'd listen to me, I started walking away with the other children. Then I heard Kai behind me, 'You can use this,' I turned around and saw him holding a stick in the air. 'Then it won't be yucky anymore.'"
