We knew Wei was ready to take her first few steps independently when she was able to stand perfectly balanced on her own a few weeks ago. She'd pull herself up and cruise along the couch or on walls, but she did not want to let go. Also, Wei preferred to have a hand to hold on to, so she often took my mom for a walk around the house.
Last weekend when we were down in Portland, Wei watched as her cousin Simon (who's only one week older than she is) paced around the house like his dad. We thought that would provide enough incentive for her to get up on her feet and give walking another try. Nope! This little girl still cruised, crawled and got whoever that was within her reach to be her human walking cane.
To be honest, Bill and I were in no hurry to get her to walk. In fact, we shudder at the thought of this little girl being independently mobile. Unlike her big brother, who was a super mellow and easygoing baby, little miss Wei is all about constant action and excitement. She's loud, expressive, assertive, and persistent. She's a go-getter and a thrill-seeker. She came out of my womb with a distinct personality!! We believe my mom will be spending the entire day chasing after Wei as the little one gets into all sorts of trouble. Wei will turn around and giggle as she's being chased. We're sure of that 'cause she already does that when she's crawling!
Then it happened tonight after dinner. We were in the living room. Wei wanted to go see what her brother was doing. She pulled herself up on the couch, turned the corner and, instead of cruising along the arm of the couch, she let go and walked over to Kai. She took 5 fast and solid steps before flopping down in front of her brother. Luckily, we were all there to witness this moment. My mom and Kai were excited. I heard myself say, "Uh-oh~~~" and Bill went, "Greeeeeaaaat."
There's no stopping her now. Within a few days we probably won't even remember what life was like before Wei could walk.
Just wait... Soon she'll start talking (::shudder::).
